Katie Green's stories have delighted audiences from coast to coast for thirty years. Known for her skill in sharing the heart of a story with the heart of the listener, Katie brings characters to life with her vision, voice and movement.
"I tell stories to build community and foster our love for the environment. Storytelling can and does change the world."
Katie became a storyteller while teaching a class for children with language and learning problems. After attending a storytelling conference at Lesley College, Katie decided to tell a story to her students instead of reading from a storybook. When she observed almost immediately the change in the children's attention and retention of the story, storytelling became a regular part of her teaching.
Today, growing research has supported what Katie discovered in her classroom: storytelling enhances literacy, problem solving and critical thinking. Storytelling promotes understanding another's point of view and increases empathy, necessary skills for conflict resolution.
For 14 years, Katie taught a graduate course in Storytelling: An Integral Part of the Curriculum at Fitchburg State College. During that time, she designed and taught a second graduate course for educators: Creative Conflict Resolution in the Classroom, based on the seminal work of Priscilla Prutzman (Children's Creative Response to Conflict) and Bill Kreidler (Educators for Social Responsibility), as well as her own years of classroom experience. Katie is an experienced facilitator and encourages educators to benefit from experiential learning.
Katie has performed and presented workshops at the National Storytelling Network, Sharing the Fire, Connecticut Storytelling Festival, Three Apples Storytelling Festival, Hans Christian Andersen Storytelling Center, Friends General Gathering (Quaker), and hundreds of libraries, schools, and museums.
She is a member of the Florida Storytelling Association, Old Tampa Bay Storytellers, NEST, the National Storytelling Network (NSN), and one of the founding members of the League for the Advancement of New England Storytelling (LANES).
As a non-violence trainer with American Friends Service Committee and the Alternatives to Violence Project, Katie facilitates workshops on non-violence with activists, educators, parents, and incarcerated people.
Over her long professional career as a storyteller and educator, Katie's contributions to storytelling have been widely recognized. She received the National Storytelling Association's Service Award, the Parent's Award for her CD, The Red Hat; and the World Storytelling Award for the book, SpinningTales, Weaving Hope: Stories of Peace, Justice & the Environment. Her work has been supported by the New England Foundation for the Arts, Massachusetts Cultural Council, schools, libraries, and numerous foundations and corporate sponsors.
After living in the woods of Central Massachusetts for over 35 years, Katie relocated to Dunedin, Florida in 2016. She continues to share stories of Truth, Folk & Faery when the occasion arises. Katie is available for performances, workshops, and speaking engagements.
